Mercury Electronics Europe has announced that the company’s quality management system has been certified to ISO/TS (Technical Specification) 16949 for the manufacture of quartz crystal products for the automotive industry.
TS16949 accreditation offers a number of benefits, the most obvious being access to the automotive sector where more electronic devices are being included in vehicles as manufacturers look to improve vehicle safety with features such as automatic braking systems, increase connectivity with Wi-Fi, add value with in-car entertainment and provide intelligent charging systems for electric and hybrid vehicles. All of these features require electronic circuitry so there are opportunities for larger volumes of business for MEC Europe.

The award also demonstrates MEC Europe’s commitment to product quality as TS16949 requires a more stringent approach across all aspects of the company’s business ultimately leading to better product quality for all customers. This level of QA also sets MEC Europe apart from low cost Asian producers and delivers a high quality source for automotive customers.
The ISO/TS 16949 was jointly developed by the International Automotive Task Force (IATF) members and submitted to the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) for approval and publication. The document is a common automotive quality system requirements catalogue based on ISO 9001:2008 with specific reference to the automotive sector. This document, coupled with customer-specific needs defines quality system requirements for use in the automotive sector.
The IATF has developed a common registration scheme for supplier third party registration to the ISO/TS 16949 including third party auditor qualifications and common rules for consistent global registration.
Benefits of IATF registration include improved product and process quality, additional confidence for global sourcing, common quality approach in the supply chain for supplier/subcontractor development and consistency, and reduction in multiple third party registrations.
